About Deccan Odyssey

A train built for a country that has always known how to travel in style.

The Deccan Odyssey made its first journey in January 2004, launched as a joint venture between Indian Railways and the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation. Named after the vast plateau it was built to cross, the train continues a tradition set by India’s earlier palace carriages, adapted for a route that runs through the courts of the Deccan.

Twenty-one carriages long, seven hundred metres from end to end, with a capacity of eighty-eight guests. In continuous operation since its inaugural run, the train has received multiple World Travel Awards for luxury rail in Asia.

Inspired by the courts of the Deccan

The interiors carry the sensibility of the Maratha, Nizam and earlier dynasties that ruled parts of the region across several centuries. Design elements include hand-worked wood panelling, rich fabrics, painted detailing, and colour palettes drawing on Deccani miniature painting from the courts of Bijapur, Golconda and Ahmednagar.

Each carriage functions as a moving drawing room, carrying a different set of design cues from the region’s cultural inheritance.

The Bar Car

The onboard bar and lounge sits at the social centre of the carriages. It carries wines, beers and spirits sourced internationally as well as from Indian producers, alongside cocktails, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. Through the evenings, the bar becomes the natural gathering point of the journey, where passengers meet fellow travellers over a drink and swap notes from the day.

Panoramic windows run through the space, keeping the passing landscape in view. The bar stays open through daylight hours as well, with light refreshments available for those preferring a slower afternoon between the day’s excursions.

The Dining Car

The train has two onboard dining cars. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served across the journey, with menus that change daily to draw on regional specialities from the states the route passes through, alongside Continental and international options at every meal. Stewards serve in traditional Maharashtrian attire.

Meals are prepared fresh in onboard kitchens for each service, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes available across every menu. The dining cars sit near the centre of the train, positioned so guests can reach them without passing through more than a few carriages. Panoramic windows on both sides frame whichever stretch of landscape the train is crossing at the time.
